Sue's Story

A Healthy Mind Equals a Healthy Life

Sue shares her journey with FITISM, showing how structured training not only improved her fitness but also boosted her mental wellbeing and proving that a healthy mind truly supports a healthy life.

"Whilst I’ve always tried to keep fit over the years in some capacity, the last few years were different. They presented multiple challenges, as they have for many other families, with both sons facing A Levels and GCSEs at the same time, alongside managing different neurodiverse conditions.

Stress took its toll, both physically and emotionally, and impacted us all in some way, affecting our mental wellbeing and ability to approach everyday life in our usual positive way. I, in particular, felt overwhelmed seeing them struggle, putting unnecessary pressure on themselves and the negative effect it was having on their personalities.

In January 2025, just after New Year, my husband Dave contacted FITISM out of the blue and signed up for the six-week challenge. It was unusual for him to be so spontaneous, but even though we have access to gym equipment at home, he felt he hugely lacked motivation and desire to get back to better fitness and mobility.

He encouraged me to do the same, as we had both neglected ourselves, putting all of our energy into supporting the family.

Dubious at first, and somewhat reluctant, I did book on for a trial session. Layla talked me through how the programme and sessions worked, and I was really astounded at how much I thoroughly enjoyed the first session and how different I felt after leaving that one hour of training.

In that one hour, I realised just how much I needed to do something for myself. To do something that took my mind off the many issues that, to some extent, were out of my control.

All I had to do was turn up — no thinking, no planning — but after committing to the six-week challenge, I knew that once I had booked on a session, I had to be there.

Eight months on, and I’m loving it as much as I did on that first day. We both are. It’s part of our weekly routine, and whilst by default my muscle mass has increased and my percentage body fat decreased, this was never the principal reason for me to join the FITISM PT programme.

I have always been happy with my physical appearance, but never appreciated how much of a difference structured training sessions would make to my mental wellbeing.

I think my experience really proves that a healthy mind equals a healthy life, and whilst I have a hugely supportive family and a wonderful network of friends, I will always be grateful for the guidance, encouragement, and motivational attitude of the FITISM trainers — they really don’t know how much of a difference they have made."
