"KICK17 wow what an experience that was!"
My FITISM Journey
The KICK I Needed
KICK17 wow what an experience that was! I pushed myself in training to my absolute breaking point; completing twenty-one sessions in one week, five within one day! I survived the caffeine withdrawals, resisted a million cravings and abstained from alcohol fuelled weekends, all in the name of competition. The Kick process allowed me to reset and adjust my daily habits and weekly routines. The fact I am still caffeine-free today and have completed yet another alcohol free weekend, clearly demonstrates that Kick is not a fad or diet, it is a way of life. The challenge inspired me to reach my fitness peak and achieve my lowest body fat percentage to date. Kick has instilled a new focus/belief within myself and I am truly amazed by the results.
My First Thoughts About FITISM
‘FITISM’ is a phrase I first heard during the summer months. I initially dismissed the idea of a new training venue as I was relatively content within my current training climate. However, it was not long before the positive whispers coming from the FITISM camp intrigued me. The gym addict within me constantly seeks out new ways to develop my training schedule and performance. Hence the reason I had to check out what the new gym in town had to offer. The energetic friendly vibe inspired me the minute I first stepped foot into FITISM's playing field.
It All Started With The GAMES
Overnight I became Bianchi bulldogs’ latest signing, as we pursued first place in the annual summer games hosted at FITISM. I had thrown myself into the most engaging, energetic, competitive, yet encouraging environment I had ever found myself in, I was hooked. This was a stark contrast to the more corporate gyms I had previously become accustomed to. The summer games were so much fun, they involved individual challenges, group challenges and the ultimate head to head final.
Team Bianchi Bulldogs’ primary target was to win GAMES17 and this was achieved. However, upon reflection, it was the immense camaraderie within our training camp that was perhaps of greatest importance to me. I am very fortunate to train alongside like-minded people striving to do their utmost best in all they do. This cements Fitism firmly into my daily life.
I feared the conclusion of the summer games would be detrimental to the atmosphere within my newfound FITISM family, however my concerns proved to be unfounded. The games created so much hunger for friendly competition, as the members strived for both individual and group development, and this continues to grow momentum today.
My desire to win and my determined attitude are perhaps my strongest attributes. My competitive nature inspires me to work harder. I tend to perform at my maximum when working alongside other members with an encouraging spirit. On many occasions during training sessions, a little friendly rivalry has proven to ignite another level to my physical capabilities! Winning is not my only concern, I genuinely love seeing other people succeeding and surpassing their goals. I live by the ‘I hope we all make it’ philosophy in life.
At FITISM we are often paired during HIIT classes and in Partner and Buddy PT sessions. This strengthens the bonds between members and results in an environment that nurtures self development and personal growth. The games were the perfect introduction to my FITISM journey. FITISM offer many courses throughout the year; KICK17 was to follow on from the summer games and this failed to disappoint.
In life, I try and find the correct training/enjoyment balance that works for me. However, it has always been of particular interest to me as to what results were personally achievable if I fully committed to a more intensive training programme and a cleaner eating pattern. To date, I had never attempted such a rigid plan outlined in ‘KICK17’ and the fact it offered a competition with a crown up for grabs meant I was all in! I love nothing better than fully immersing myself into a challenge and committing 100%. There is no middle ground, I always have an ‘All or Nothing’ mentality in life.
Our performance was assessed 50% from points accumulated for gym attendance and performance and 50% from the percentage reduction in body fat measurements. I knew with my strong willpower and determined attitude and the additional support of my newfound FITISM Family, I was well equipped to giving KICK17 a real shot.
I am in tune with my health and body and I recognise when I am not making the right health choices. At this time, I often opt for a three day juice cleanse as a way to reset my clean eating pattern and this method works for me, at least for a while. Juice cleanses are by no means my favourite of days, however, I do feel the benefits after giving my digestive system a rest. I felt the Kick process was a progression on from juice cleanses I had done in the past. It educated me on gut health, provided nutritional advice, included a suggested eating plan with recipes and it also incorporated a juice cleanse.
The FITISM Way
Following the launch night, I had belief in the process and I had the confidence in my ability to complete the twenty-eight day cycle and looked forward to the positive changes to my health, appearance and my routine going forward.
My new routine incorporated apple cider vinegar shots, flax seeds, probiotics and a dramatic increase in my water intake. I did by no means starve my body, I love food and it often surprises people how much I eat! My love for food continued during Kick, my choices were more controlled and educated. Within a matter of days, I was craving clean food to fuel my body after intensive work outs. I think most of us KICKers would agree that the toughest part of Kick was the first few days. I underestimated the huge impact of going ‘cold turkey’ on caffeine, sugar, processed food, alcohol and dairy and the effect it would have at both mental and physical levels.
The twenty-eight day duration period seemed like forever in the early days. The social impact of changing my diet and giving up coffee and alcohol was immense. With the fast pace in which we all live life, a lot of our daily routine is habit; where morning coffees, Friday night drinks and eating convenience food on the go, becomes the norm. During kick, I had to prepare my meals and plan social events that did not evolve around my usual coffees and wines! A common side-effect of caffeine withdrawal is headaches, fortunately I avoided these. However, eliminating toxins hugely affected my sleep pattern in the early days. In addition, I encountered horrendous night sweats and questioned what I was exposing my body to! Admittedly, it was a difficult start, but this was short-lived. My body quickly adjusted to the changes and with a little staying power and guidance I settled into my new nutritional ways. The consumption of any banned food or drink, imposed a ten point penalty, which was enough of a deterrent for me! Nothing was worth losing points for!
One Team - In It Together
I would have never contemplated embarking on a challenge similar to Kick on my own, completing the challenge as a group was Kick’s number one appeal. FITISM ensures Facebook and WhatsApp chats are created for every challenge. This platform allowed us to communicate not only with the Wilmslow members but also the Bakewell team, who many of us have never really met. The ‘support’ groups create a real sense of togetherness, during kick there was a great deal of interaction and sharing, where I always felt at ease voicing my concerns and struggles. I was reassured that the other 52 participants were experiencing similar symptoms. Extra group sessions and challenges ran throughout the four weeks, which again reinforced the bond between us. Good banter always comes as standard in the FITISM chats and sessions, spurring us on even on the toughest of days.
My physical results of Kick were clearly visible as early as day ten. I lost so much body fat from my tummy and hips, a clear indication I had been consuming too much sugar and processed food in my diet. Many of my friends and family noticed my body fat loss and commented on my glowing complexion and bright eyes.
The Mindfulness Effect
Although the physical benefits were huge and clearly evident, it is the mindfulness you gain during Kick that was of paramount importance to me. I relied heavily on willpower to complete the challenge successfully. This has resulted in a more focused and determined attitude in all aspects of my life. I no longer feel I cannot function without caffeine, I avoid the high and lows associated with sugar and I am more consistent and efficient throughout the day. Furthermore, I feel my decision making process is better and I am more energetic and alert.
Gym life is a huge part of who I am, I genuinely look forward to training everyday and love to test my body and mind as far as possible. During Kick I upped my training from four-five days a week to six days, often doing three training sessions in a day. The physical demands I was putting on my body daily were only sustainable as I was fuelling my body in the correct way. I really did push myself during Kick and pushed my body to its limit. During Kick I have achieved my best results in all my training history to date. Reaching 14.4% body fat (which puts me in the peak of the athlete category, I just need to find my sport now)!
Kick is not a fad nor a diet, we are not told what to eat and what not to eat and left to our own devices.
Kick is a supported process, which has educated me on gut health and has introduced me to
daily routines which I have implemented into my everyday life post Kick. I think the twenty-eight day duration period ensures it is not just a quick fix. I believe if you can stick to this programme 100% and complete the cycle there is no way you will revert back to where you started. I am now over three weeks post Kick and I am still generally sticking to a more relaxed version of Kick.
I am lucky to train in such a fun, energetic, competitive, yet encouraging environment. I have settled so well into training at FITISM, it’s hard to believe I have only been training at my new gym for 4 months. The gym offers all the classes I require; RIDE, JAB, HIIT and RESTORE and the Buddy PT options permit me to have personal training expertise at a low cost.
The trainers at FITISM are the best I've worked with, they educate me further on a daily basis and l feel refreshed in my training. They know my own individual capabilities and limits and know how to push me to aim higher and believe in myself. FITISM work with me on achieving my targets and help me to set and accomplish new goals and perform at my very best. I am constantly achieving new PB’s and I am finally finding some love for deadlifts after a lifetime of being scared to lift!
To Sum It Up
KICK17 has tested and challenged my willpower more than ever. I have trained to my absolute maximum reaching my strongest, fittest and fastest. I have a real sense of achievement in successfully completing the 28 day programme. Thank you to all the staff at FITISM, all the clients and most of all, our Kick team. We smashed this, well done everyone! I’m looking forward to continuing my FITISM journey alongside all of you in search of the best version of myself.
